How to choose the correct NIC code

The safest NIC workflow is activity first, hierarchy second, final code last.

1. Describe the activity plainly

Write what the business actually does in simple language: service, product, process, material or customer outcome. That input works better than guessing a code from memory.

2. Narrow the hierarchy

Use NIC search to shortlist likely Sections and Divisions, then compare Groups and Classes before selecting a six-digit Sub-class.

3. Compare related codes

Check sibling codes, not just the selected page. Nearby activity titles often reveal the boundary between two similar classifications.

4. Verify against the source layer

Before using the result in a filing or registration workflow, confirm the final code against the official NIC 2025 source file and any relevant class note.
